Hematology and Clinical Laboratory

Hematology is the studies blood and blood forming tissues or circulating blood components and the disorders associated with them. The Hematology Unit Hospital Teluk Intan provides diagnostic services in the field of hematology for Hospital Teluk Intan and acts as a reference laboratory for other hospital and health centers. The work procedure in haematology laboratory are full blood picture to determine Total white blood count (TWBC), Total red blood count (TRBC), Platelets Count (PC), Haemoglobins (HB), Packed cell volume (PCV), Differential count and reticulocytes count, The bone marrow aspiration using May Grunwald Giemsa Stain, periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) and Peroxidase Stain. Lastly is the blood to determine Le cells, Leucocyte Alkaline Phosphatase Score (Lap Score), ESR, G6PD, Sickling test and also CD4/ CD8.

I was able to observe the staff doing these tests which are the receiving of samples in Haematology Laboratory, the storage of stained slides, processing a full blood picture, processing of leucocyte alkaline phosphates score, processing of Le cells, processing of G6PD, May Grunwald Giemsa and Reticulocyte Stain And Count. In Hematology and clinical lab, two machines used in STAT service for Full Blood Count Automation are Sysmex K-4500 and Sysmex Kx-21.The Sysmex instrument is a fully automated quantitative haematology analyzer for in vitro diagnostic use in clinical laboratories. It provides quick, easy and accurate screening for patients.

Clinical laboratory carries out basic tests. Most of the test done here are qualitative tests. The Lab Turn Around Time (LTAT) is within 1 hour except for ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) and reticulocyte count (2-3 hours). Most clinical test is performed on blood specimens, urine, stool, vagina swabs, urethral swabs, fluid and gastric aspiration. Under the blood test are full blood count, eosinophil count, ESR, Hb (Haemoglobin estimation), retic count, platelet count and white cell count. Meanwhile, under urine tests are ketone, urine FEME, urine microscopic examination, urine for protein and glucose, Bence Jones protein, bilirubin, bile salt, pH, specific gravity and many more.

Test of blood film malarial parasite and microfilaria also been conducted. Stool examination also been conducted to determine the existence of ova and amoeba, occult blood, fat globule or stool reducing sugar. Clinical lab also provide ‘STAT’ service for test of blood film for malaria (BF/MP) Microfilaria, full blood count (FBC), and stool for Entameoba Histolytica, Urine full examination and microscopic examination and also urine ketone test.
